PROMINENT FIGURES OF MUSIC

Mir Movsum Nevvab Garabagi (1833-1918)

He was a poet, painter, calligraph and musicologist. He created the tractate "Vuzuh ul-ergam" ("Definition of figures", 1884) as a practical means for those willing to study and perform mugam.. The composition provided information on the main mugams of that period, theoretical rules of creating mugam songs, ways of their performance, and attitude to texts of poems. The tractate as the first published creation of Azeri music and valuable historical document testifies the high level of development of the culture of folklore music in Azerbaijan in the 19th century.
